By Birat Anupam, ITAHARI: The State- 1 Government has felicitated the medal winners of the South Asian Games (SAG) 2019 on Wednesday at state capital Biratnagar. Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai and Social Development Minister Jiwan Ghimire handed over cash prize and certificate to altogether 88 athletes.
Despite 98 medals from the state, some players bagged more than one medals, said Nawaraj Rai, the Chief Personal Secretary to the CM Rai. According to Rai, eight million rupees have been deposited into the individual bank accounts of all 88 athletes representing the state. The cash prize for gold, silver, and bronze medalist is Rs. three lakh, two lakh, and one lakh respectively.
The SAG, held in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Janakpur from 1 to 10 December 2019, saw 98 medals won by the athletes of the State one. Out of 206 national medals, State-1 won almost 47.6 percent medals. Two dozen medalists were present at the formal function on Wednesday. After the conclusion of the South Asian mega sporting event, State-1 Government had pledged to felicitate players with cash prizes in the second week of December. After eight months of the announcement, State-1 Government finally felicitated the players on the last day of the fiscal year 2076/77 BS. Speaking at the formal felicitation organized at the auditorium hall of the Office of the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers, Chief Minister Rai said State-1 Government has highly prioritized the sports sector.
”The sports sector has moved ahead in an innovative way in the state”, remarked CM Rai, ”Sportspersons have elevated the pride of the nation.” CM Rai said his government was working hard to make State-1 a national hub of sporting activities by allocating adequate budget to the sector. CM Rai added, ”There should be no politics in the sports.” Jiwan Ghimire, the Social Development Minister, also stressed the need for adopting sports as a proud profession. Highlighting the contribution of the medalists for the state, Ghimire said, ”Now, sports must be a reliable way to eke out living for all deserving athletes.”
Sukraraj Rai, the gold medalist in the Golf from Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, expressed happiness over the felicitation by the state government. ”We are thankful to the state government”, remarked Rai. He added, ”We urge the government for more long-lasting solutions to the woes of all sportspersons in the state.”
