KATHMANDU: It may take you by surprise to hear that dogs are used as guards for school-going children here. Of course, parents from Leldum of Juving VDC-9 in the district send a dog as a guard with their children while going to school because the children have to pass through the jungles without guardians or elder ones.
A local from Leldum, Dawa Gyaljen Sherpa said he had been sending a dog for two years with his son for his security throughout the way to school. There is a big jungle but no friends for him, he added.
Gyaljen is sending his son to a school located at Hill of Baku, a neighbouring VDC. The dog is his friend, said Gyaljen.
Moreover, he said he feels it quite protected and confident when the dog is accompanied with his son for the security.
Similarly, his son Gelbu Sherpa said when there are no friends, the dog protects us.
“I don’t know where the dog goes after taking us to school. But it comes to us when the school is over at 4:00pm, “he added.
The locals from Panggom have also begun imitating the Gyalfen way of providing security to school-going children. RSS
