International Bodo Meche literature and culture assembly kicks off

JHAPA : The International Bodo Meche Literature and Culture Assembly has commenced in Jhapa.

The conference has been organised with the objective of promoting and preserving the rituals, culture, language and script of the Meche peoples.

The language, culture and script of the Meche tribe is on the verge of extinction, it is said.

State-1 government chief minister Sherdhan Rai declared open the assembly at Dhulabari of Mechinagar municipality in Jhapa on Saturday.

Chief Minister Rai on the occasion said it was the responsibility of the state government to protect and work for the betterment of the Meche community that is under the threat of disappearance.

Stating that 116 out of the 125 ethnic groups found in the country live in the State-1, chief minister Rai said,” We are in the process of drafting the policies and programmes of the State and the Meche community’s needs would be specially addressed in the upcoming budget of the state government.”

He expressed the belief that the assembly would prepare a historic document on the rituals, culture, language and script of the Meche peoples.

President of the program organizing committee, Kamal Meche, said the assembly aimed at preparing a historic document on the origins, language, script, rites and rituals, culture, traditions of the Meche community as no such document existed so far.

Jhapa district has the largest number of Meche population in the country.

The population of Meches is around 4,500.
Writers and litterateurs, culture experts and politicians from the Meche community from Assam, Nagaland and other places of India are also participating in the program.
