KATHMANDU: At a time when the country is gearing up for the elections of the constituent assembly, the largest democratic party of the country, Nepali Congress has been marred into internal disputes and the parliamentary committee of the party has not been able to start the process for selecting candidates. The party is having internal dispute between party president Sushil Koirala and senior leader of the party Sher Bahadur Deuwa.
Party leaders have been publicly claiming that if they were not made the candidate they will not support other candidate for the election and have been hatching conspiracy against leaders of other faction. Although it has already been six years since the two Congress parties united but they are yet to get out of internal disputes. Senior leaders of the party party president Koirala, senior leader Deuwa, Khum Bahadur Khadka, who has been serving jail sentence on corruption case, vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel and leaders Govinda Raj Joshi and Kul Bahadur Gurung has been lobbying to ensure more candidates from their camp and have been doing internal dispute.
Koirala and Deuwa have been lobbying to include more persons of their camp in the parliamentary committee of the party, which was mandated to select candidates for the elections. There is dispute among the leaders and cadres affiliated with Koirala and Deuwa from central level to village level. Similarly nepotism is rampant in the party, which has also been affecting the party activities. For example the dispute between KC families and Mahat families in Nuwakot, dispute among Shekhar, Sujata and Amod in Morang are the results of such nepotism. There is dispute between Ram Chandra Poudel and Govinda Raj Joshi, who have been vying for the CA from Tanahu district. Similarly, the dispute between Arjun Nurshing KC and Ram Sharan Mahat, who are trying to get candidacy from Nuwakot, is also creating problem in the party.
Nepali Congress cadre Sagar Pathak says that Arjun Nurshing KC can cast vote to tree (the election symbol of Nepali Congress) only if he of his brother gets ticket from the district. The statement is enough to understand how the party is running. The dispute among senior leaders of the party has been affecting party function upto grass-root level. The public statement of party leaders that they would work to defeat the party candidate if they were not given the tickets shows the pathetic condition of oldest democratic parties of the country. Pathak doubts that the party may not get expected result in the CA election due to internal rift. “The party faced defeat due to the wish of Girija Prasad Koirala to become the President of the Country and in this election party will face similar fate due to dispute among party leaders and cadres,” Pathak adds.
