KATHMANDU;- On the occasion of the cultural and historical festival Indrajatra, President Bidyadevi Bhandari visited the Gaddi meeting at Durbar area of Hanumadhoka and observed the procession.
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Jabra, Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, National Assembly Speaker Ganesh Prasad Timalsina, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Pampha Bhusal, Finance Minister Janardan Sharma and other ministers, MPs state assembly members and local people’s representatives were present to observe the procession. On the occasion of the procession, President Bhandari had given permission to take Dakshina in a chariot of Sriganesha, Sribhairav and Sree Kumari. After this, a procession of Sriganesha, Sribhairav and Sree Kumari was held.
Today is the main day of Indra Jatra which started on Saturday morning on Bhadra Shukla Dwadashi by raising the flag at Hanumandhoka Durbar area. Hari Prasad Subedi, chief of Guthi Sansthan Kathmandu branch informed that a rath yatra will be held in Tallotol today. A rath yatra will be held in Upper Tol on Monday.
On September 26, only women will travel in the chariot. In the evening of the same day, President Bhandari will go to Hanumandhoka Durbar and receive Tika and Prasad from Kumari. There is even a tradition of the president exchanging swords with Kumari after receiving Tika and Prasad.
The Indrajatra, which lasts for more than two weeks, ends on September 26 at 10:36 pm after the rainbow. After the fall, the lingo of Indrajatra is sewn on the bank of Bagmati in Teku Dobhan. There is a tradition of dragging the lingo to slow down. Indrajatra is believed to have started in the time of Pratap Malla. The practice of rath yatra in Indrajatra was started by King Gunakamdev. This is one of the longest journeys celebrated in the valley.
Indra, who is worshiped as the god of rain and contemporaries, was also worshiped today. On the occasion of the procession, Lakhenach, Dash Avatar dance, Mahakali dance, Ramchandra dance, Pulukisi dance and other cultural jhanki and dance songs are performed. A public holiday is given in the Kathmandu Valley on the occasion of this festival.
