Indian External Affairs Minister shortens his Nepal Visit; Experts term the visit as natural

KATHMANDU: The official visit of Indian Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid has been cut short for a day. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has informed that he would stay in Kathmandu only for nine hours.

Sources at MOFA said that Khurshid is arriving at 9:15 am on Tuesday morning. He will be holding bilateral meeting with his counterpart Madhav Prasad Ghimire at 9:30 am. Khurshid is also paying courtesy call on President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, Chairman of Election Council, Khil Raj Regmi and leaders of the major political parties before flying back to New Delhi later in the evening.

Meanwhile speaking at an interaction in the Capital on Monday, Nepal’s former ministers and experts on foreign affairs have said that the upcoming visit of India’s Minister for External Affairs, Salman Khurshid is a routine one and comes very naturally.

“There is no other meaning of the visit. It’s a routine visit and comes very naturally as a part of the bilateral ties between the two countries,” said Ram Sharan Mahat, a former foreign affairs minister from Nepali Congress.

Upendra Yadav, a former foreign affairs minister from Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum said the visit will probably focus on making the November 19 elections successful.”Details of the visit are still sketchy. But we can hope that the visit will be fruitful,” he added.

Pashupati Shumsher Rana, a Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader who also held the same portfolio as Mahat and Yadav, said the visit is reflection of Indian will just like Chinese and other diplomatic missions in Nepal that the election in November must take place. “China and India have same views on election. They want to see it materialized in the already declared time,” he said.
