India bags the title of SAFF U-16 Championship defeating Nepal 1-0


KATHMANDU: Despite high hopes of Nepali football fans, India defeated Nepal 1-0 to clinch the title of the second SAFF U-16 Football Tournament held at Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu, on Tuesday.

India’s Jerry Lalrinzuala scored the winning goal in the 18th minute of the first half. However, both the teams failed to score in the second half.

Despite creating several of chances on both the halves, Nepal failed to score the elusive goal that shattered their hope of winning the SAFF U-16 Championship s. Nepali football team failed to take advantage of home crowd and pitch.

Nepal had earlier booked their place in the finals of the second edition of SAFF U-16 Championship s by defeating Bangladesh 5-1 in a game played at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu on Saturday.

This was the first encounter between Nepal and India in the final of the tournament as Pakistan had bagged the title in the first edition of the tournament held in 2011. Nepal had lost to India in the semi-final in the previous tournament.

Nepal had defeated Bangladesh 5-1 while India beat Afghanistan 4-3 on penalty shootout to advance to the final of the tournament.
