IEC chairperson expedites consultations with parties for timely poll


KATHMANDU: As the leaders of major political parties trying to make the incumbent government led by Chief Justice as failure and once again reach to the helm of power, chairperson of Interim Election Council (IEC), Khil Raj Regmi, expedited his consultation process.

In this process, Chairperson Regmi held discussions with Federal Democratic Front led by Upendra Yadav. The Front includes Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Nepal, National Madhes Socialist Party, and Tamsaling Nepal Party, among others.

During the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar, they talked on Constituent Assembly (CA) elections, number of proportional seats in the CA, and limitation for threshold, among others, said Press Coordinator of IEC Chairman Regmi.

At the meeting, IEC Chairman Regmi urged the agitating political parties to join the election process postponing their protest programs. In response, the leaders demanded that IEC Chairperson should resign as a Chief Justice, not decrease the proportional seats as compared to the earlier CA, scrap the four-party high level mechanism, and re-delineation of constituency numbers on the basis of population, among others among others.

Similarly, IEC Chairperson Regmi met collectively Chairperson of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Pashupati Shumsher Rana, senior leader Lokendra Bahadur Chand, and Chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party, Surya Bahadur Thapa. According to reports, the meeting dwelt on making the total number of CA members 585.

IEC chairperson has been expediting the consultations with different political parties in a bid to convince them to take part in the elections. Although some parties of the 33-party alliance, which is opposing the poll, are positive towards the government’s call, while CPN-Maoist remained adamant to its stance. The party has been saying that it would not sit for talks unless its pre-conditions are met. According to party source, UCPN-Maoist chair wants to reach to the helm of power after making the November poll failure.
