Host Nepali team defeats Baharin 2-0 in AFC Cup Qualifiers


KATHMANDU: Few days after the Nepali football fan stunned due to performance of Nepali football team, host Nepal defeated Bahrain 2-0 in the ongoing AFC Cup Qualifiers 2013 held at Dasharath Stadium on Wednesday.

Nepali player Anjan Lama gave the lead for the home team scoring at the 12th of the first half. Ananta Tamang then made it 2-0 for Nepal when he capitalized on a cross from Bimal Gharti Magar, the new sensation of Nepali football, scoring a goal right at the stroke of first half.

In the competitive match, Nepal’s goalie Roman Rasaili saved couple of good attempts at goal by the formidable opponent Bahrain. Bahrain’s Hazem was shown red card after fouling Bimal Gharti Magar in the injury time of the match.

Now, Nepal will take on mighty Iraq in another match of the tournament on Friday. Iraq has beaten Turkmenistan 8-1 in the inaugural match of the tournament today itself. Nepal has been drawn alongside Iraq, Bahrain and Turkmenistan in Group C.

Nepal lost against Afghanistan in the SAFF Championship held in the Capital despite excellent performance during the match. Although Nepal couldn’t get hold of the SAFF trophy, the home team reached the semifinals of the 8th SAFF tournament defeating India, ending a seven year victory drought against the powerhouse neighbor, and Bangladesh, and played a draw against Pakistan. Nepal was defeated by Afghanistan in the semifinals.
