HLPC decided to request Govt. to form commission for reallocating constituencies; hold talks with agitating parties

KATHMANDU: The high level political committee has urged the government to immediately form electoral constituency delineation commission.

Monday’s meeting of the Committee held under the chairmanship of President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala has decided to request the government to form such commission in line with the verdict of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had issued the verdict to form such commission in line with the Interim Constitution of 2006. The Madhesi leaders had also been pressurizing the committee for the same.

The meeting also decided to hold talks for finalizing the date for the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections at the earliest. Also the meeting decided to request the Election Commission (EC) and government to solve the issues of the Electoral law and pass the ordinances for the same.

Speaking to the media persons, NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat said that the next meeting of the committee would focus on scraping the decisions, which could affect the election, made by the earlier government. Similarly the meeting also decided to hold talks with the agitating political parties, which have been opposing the polls. Earlier also the meeting made the decision but they did not materialize their commitment of holding the talks with dissatisfied groups rather involved in blaming the government for not announcing the date for election of the constituent assembly.

The next meeting of the committee is to be chaired by CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal. The political parties have been exchanging the chair of the Commission on a rotation basis among top leaders of four political parties. Although the committee was mandated to assist the government, it failed to do so.
