Manesh Shrestha, KATHMANDU (TNN): Nepal’s attempt to independently measure the height of Mt Everest is floundering because of bureaucratic red tape and lack of budget, officials said. Two years ago, following Chinese claims that the height of Everest was 8,844.43 metres, Nepal government decided to measure the height of the world’s tallest mountain.
The world’s highest mount straddles Nepal and China. “But budget was not allocated for survey officials to go to the field,” said a department of survey official. There is at present no new plan to measure the height of the mountain, director general of the department Nagendra Jha said.
The present official height of 8,848 metres was established in 1950s by Indian surveyors through the trigonometric triangulation method. In 1973, China had affirmed this height. The National Geographic Society of US funded study determined the height to be 8,850 metres, according to Buddhi Narayan Shrestha of department of survey.
