Gachhadar says UDMF ready to compromise on threshold provision; Rijal says it strengthens democracy

BIRATNAGAR: Chairman of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik Bijay Kumar Gachhadar has said that the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) was ready to compromise on the issue of minimum election threshold if other political parties agreed over it.

Talking to journalists at Biratnagar Airport on Friday, leader Gachhadar said that UDMF was in a mood of giving up its stance against the threshold just for guaranteeing the upcoming Constituent Assembly elections and drafting a new constitution.

Gachhadar, who is the coordinator of the UDMF, informed that minimum threshold system in the election was essential for the stability of democracy. He stressed on the need for resolving all election-related disputes for the announcement of election date.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress leader Dr. Minendra Rijal has argued that the minimum threshold system should be adopted in the election. He claimed that the adoption of minimum threshold would strengthen democracy and maintain discipline in the election. The new CA again would face obstructions in drafting a constitution if the threshold system was ignored, he added.

The parties have been divided over the issue of threshold as Nepali Congress and CPN-UML firmly stand for it while UCPN-Maoist and UDMF have been opposing it. The issue has been hindering the electoral process.
