Former Prime Minister Shrestha no more; last rites to be performed today


KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Marich Man Singh Shrestha passed away at the age of 73 at Norvic International Hospital, Thapathali on early Thursday morning.

He breathed his last at around 3 am this morning. Shrestha was undergoing treatment at the hospital since Wednesday morning in ventilator support .He was suffering from lung cancer.

Shrestha, who was suffering from cancer, was airlifted from New Delhi to Kathmandu on Tuesday night after he expressed his desire to die in his homeland and admitted at the hospital after no significant improvement in his condition.

Shrestha was born in Salyan district in 1940. He was Nepal’s prime minister for four years till April 6, 1990. He is survived by his three sons and a daughter.

Shrestha faced financial crisis for his treatment. His family members have to appeal to general public for supporting his treatment. The government did not bear the treatment expenses of the former premier at a time when other former Prime Ministers have been spending lavish lifestyle by spending the money from state coffer. The apathy of the government led by Chief Justice for the former Prime Minister was highly condemned by the Nepali society. In social media sites people have expressed their strong support to the former Premier, who was known as nationalist figure and requested the government to support for his treatment rather than being biased on his political ideology.

Shrestha became popular due to his stance to the nationality when India imposed blocked during 1990s. He did not bend down towards Indian interference. Analysts have been underscoring the need of nationalist feeling like that shown by Shrestha in 1990s at present moment when the country is facing interference from its neighbors.

Meanwhile, according to Shrestha´s son Anil, Shrestha’s body has been kept at his residence in Dhapasi to pay last tribute to him. Anil further informed that preparations have been made to carry out his last rites at Pashupati Aryaghat at around 1 pm this afternoon.

It is yet to see whether the government shows some humanitarian behavior to the former Prime Minister or not as the state used to give state honor at the final rites of former Prime Ministers. The Political parties and current Chief Justice led government has been forgetting its duty in the name of so called democracy and consensus.
