KATHMANDU: In a very strange incident former Minister and chairperson of Sadbhawana Party Rajendra Mahato has begun a fast-unto-death protest in Shantibatika of Kathmandu from Tuesday accusing the government of being indifferent towards the purported Constituent Assembly elections. The government has been holding consultation with different political parties for announcing the date for CA poll.
A statement issued by Mahato before starting the hunger strike said, “It is a matter of pain that the government did not seem to be willing to announce the election date immediately or announce the date within a specific period of time when we sat in the table for talks today.”
He informed that as the government does not seem serious for holding the elections of the constituent assembly, he is beginning the fast-unto-death in order to compel the government to hold the CA elections in November and fix the election date as it was a do-or-die situation for him.
He warned that the government and the major political parties would be responsible for the repercussions of his hunger strike.
The 10-point demand of Sadbhawana Party includes provision of citizenship from mother’s name, declaration of the Constituent Assembly elections date and delineation of the electoral constituencies on the geographical and cultural basis.
In another incident, a group of unidentified group murdered former member of the Constituent Assembly Shardul Miya (50) on Tuesday morning.
Miya was murdered using a sharp weapon while he was sleeping at his residence near his own petrol pump in Bishanpur Chowk, Kalyanpur VDC at around 1 am. Miya’s throat was found slit.
Police said they are investigating the case to find the motive behind the murder as well as those involved in killing Miya, who was elected from Saptari constituency number 5 as an independent candidate in the CA elections.
Meanwhile, supporters of Miya clashed with Police in district headquarters Rajbiraj and Kalyanpur VDC, while they were enforcing shut-down protesting the murder of Miya.
Local police said that two APF officers were injured in a clash with Miya supporters in Rajbiraj. The former CA member’s supporters have also obstructed the East-west highway in Saptari district demanding that those involved in the murder be arrested and tried.
Meanwhile, the government has formed a four-member committee to probe into the murder of former lawmaker Miya. Miya was found murdered in his home in Sapatari, on Tuesday morning. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the AIG Dinkar Shamsher Rana-led committee, which comprising Eastern region security officials, has been given seven days to investigate the incident. The ministry has also condoled Miya’s death.
