Former King barred from distributing relief materials to flood victims

KANCHANPUR : At a time when the leaders of political parties scared from the act of former King Gyanendra Shah to put balms at the wounds of flood victims of far Western region, rather than following his suit the political parties have been trying to disrupt his act of distributing relief to flood victims.

The Political parties, who forced the government not to allow to land helicopter of former King in the Army barrack in Darchula on Thursday have blocked his attempt to distribute relief items in Tikapur on Friday. Shah was in Kailali to provide relief materials through Himani Trust, an NGO operated by his daughter-in-law and former princess Himani Shah.

The District Administration Office, Kailali has barred former King Gyanendra Shah and his daugther-in-law’s charity from distributing relief materials to the flood victims at Tikapur, citing that the election code of conduct has already come to effect.

Along with the representatives of the Himani Trust, the former king had reached the relief distribution venue in Tikapur at around 8:15 am on Friday morning. But the distribution was thwarted due to the DAO intervention.

The Trust then handed over the materials to the district chapter of Nepal Red Cross Society and District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee for distribution. The materials will be distributed through government channel to more than 1,000 flood victims of the district. Ex-king Shah has already distributed flood relief materials in the far-flung Darchula district.

The administration cited the recently introduced election code of conduct as the reason for disallowing Shah from distributing the materials. Former Prime Minister and vice-chairperson of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has expressed exception to the act of former monarch and warned that former King could have been jailed if he was the Prime Minister.
