Following criticism Foreign Minister cancels his New York trip

KATHMANDU: Following pressure from different quarters about the proposed foreign trip of the key members of the Interim Election Government at a time when the country is passing through critical stage, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire has withdrawn his name from the Nepali delegation that would go to New York to take part in the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The planned trip of Interim Election Government Chairaman Khil Raj Regmi and Home Minister Ghimire to New York at a time when the nation is gearing up for the second Constituent Assembly (CA) election drew criticisms from several various.

However, Chairman of Interim Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi’s plan has not been changed. Regmi would be leading the delegation as decided earlier. According to Regmi’s press adviser Bimal Gautam, the decision was made on Friday following a conversation between the Chairman and the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

“The fact is that the Foreign Affairs Minister had decided to cancel the UN trip four days ago (last Friday evening),” Gautam informed. The government has not officially made public the decision yet.

It has been learnt that President Ram Baran Yadav had dispatched an informal letter to Regmi urging him to cancel his New York visit in view of the upcoming CA elections. Earlier, Regmi and Ghimire were scheduled to leave for 11-day trip to New York on September 21. The government has been facing criticism for not concentrating more on the CA election as the CJ led government was formed with the objective of holding the elections of the Constituent Assembly by November.
