KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has condemned ill-treatment and an attempted attack on journalist Pratap Rana for writing news. Ramesh Baral, ward secretary of Bhimad municipality-5, has been charged with mistreating Rana when the latter on April 29 reached his office for information.
“Ill-treatment and attempted attack on a journalist having a constitutional responsible for informing the general people is an infringement upon the freedom of expression. We strongly denounce the act, and demand that the government takes action against the person involved in it,” reads a statement issued today by the FNJ’s general secretary Ramesh Bista.
The FNJ has also demanded the creation of favourable environment for journalists to exercise their rights guaranteed by the constitution, while respecting the freedom of the press and expression. Rana is treasurer of the FNJ, Tanahun branch and is also associated with the Kantipur Daily.
Earlier on April 26, a group of around 16 people reached the house of a journalist Bechu Gaud and launched an attempt attack on him for writing news.
