FNCCI Prez Pandey Arrested

KATHMANDU: Pradeep Jung Pandey, the president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), has been arrested from his residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday evening on the charge of evading a 30-year-old jail sentence. Pandey was arrested from his residence in Maharajgunj hours after the Supreme Court refused his plea not to arrest him for the already “settled corruption case”.

On June 30, 1982, the Kathmandu District Court had given Pandey, who was an employee at Nepal Water Supply Corporation, a jail term of three years and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 after finding him guilty in a corruption case. Pandey had immediately challenged the verdict but the then court to hear appeal of corruption cases had upheld the verdict of Kathmandu District Court on June 20, 1984. Pandey has yet to serve around 1 year and nine months of the sentence, according to the court.

The issue that Pandey had not served his jail sentence hit headlines after his rivals raised it during the election for the office bearers of FNCCI in April. Pandey’s opponents had argued that since Pandey was convicted in a corruption case, an issue of moral turpitude, he cannot hold any public post . Kathmandu District Court maintained in its record book that Pandey was yet to serve the remaining sentence in the graft case. Pandey had argued that his sentence had already been waived and the district court should mention the waiver in its record.
