Expecting mother airlifted from Khotang to Kathmandu


KATHMANDU: An expecting mother in a critical health condition has been rescued by a helicopter and brought to the Kathmandu-based Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital on Tuesday noon.

Mandira Bishwakarma of Kepilasgadi Rural Municipality-2 in Khotang district was airlifted after she was found to have to carry a still fetus in her womb, putting her health and life at high risk. She was flown to Kathmandu under the Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizen’s as per the rescue procedure for expecting and new and nursing mothers who were residing in remote areas and who are at risk. She was admitted to District Hospital in Khotang on Monday after she went into labor. Doctors there examined and found out that the unborn baby had died in the womb, informed District Hospital, Dr. Narayan Baral. Bishwakarma is currently undergoing treatment at the Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital and is out of danger. Like Bishwakarma, 17 other expecting and new mothers at critical conditions were airlifted to the nearest well-equipped hospitals for immediate medical inventions during the lockdown ordered since March 24 to prevent the outbreak and spread of COVID-19, according to President Upliftment Programme Coordination Unit chief, Anju Dhungana.

Meanwhile, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Parbat Gurung has appealed one and all to inform the nearest health offices or local units for pregnant women and new mothers facing health risks for the government to positively intervene in the matter at the earliest.
