KASKI: Chief Election Commissioner Nil Kantha Upreti, who has been reiterating that the date for the election of the constituent assembly should not be changes once it is announced, has said that the government is mulling to announce the date of election for new constituent assembly within ten days.
Speaking at a program in Kaski on Monday, Upreti, who arrived here to observe the voter’s list campaign, said that elections were the backbone of a democratic system, and the commission is committed to hold free and fair elections.
He further informed that the new polls date will be fixed within 10 days after promulgating the elections related legislation as the political parties have tentatively agreed to amend the laws related to the CA. The election ordinance remained inconclusive at the cabinet as the political parties could not agree on some provisions of the proposed legislation like the threshold for Proportional Representation System and qualification of the candidates among others.
Stating that the Election Commission (EC) has already initiated the proceedings of the party registration process for the upcoming purported CA elections, Upreti informed that the EC has already accomplished its internal preparations for the polls.
Upreti further informed that the citizenship distribution and voter’s list update campaigns are being carried out throughout the nation in a smooth manner. Earlier the political parties have agreed to hold the elections by June this year. They later postponed the date for November as they failed to complete the tasks promptly. However, the threat of an alliance of 33-political parties to disrupt the electoral process and failure at the part of four major political parties to hold negotiation raised suspicion over the November poll. The indecisiveness of the major political parties forced the dissolution of the four-year-long constituent assembly without promulgating the new constitution.
