Election fever grips the country after poll opposing FSP decides to join electoral process

KATHMANDU: Despite opposition from 33-party alliance, the election fever has gripped the country as most of the political parties have been reaching to the people for the elections of the constituent assembly.

People became optimistic that the election would take place on November 19 after the Federal Socialist Party (FSP) has agreed to take part in the elections after the party inked a deal with High Level Political Committee (HLPC) to go for the poll.

In a meeting held on Friday morning, the Ashok Rai-led party reached a five-point agreement with the HLPC. According to the agreement, the multi-party round-table will be held within the last week of September and the size of CA will be 601-member like in the last election.

The five-party mechanism that guides the government had been sticking to the election of 585-member CA until recently. Also, it has been agreed that the new CA would acknowledge the issues that the dissolved CA had resolved.

Earlier three alliances have been opposing the poll. However Upendra Yadav led Madheshi Front and Rai led party joined the camp for holding the elections of the constituent assembly but CPN-Maoist led alliance is yet to agree to come on board. The HLPC has been continuing its efforts to bring the dissenting parties on board. The Baidya led alliance could not agree for taking part in the election after the HLPC rejected its two prime demands of deferring the election slated for November 19 and dissolving the government led by Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi.

Political analysts say that with all the poll opposing parties joining the electoral process, it would be difficult for CPN-Maoist led alliance to boycott the poll. They are hopeful that the alliance would also join the electoral alliance if the major parties provide some face saver to them.

With this agreement with Ashok Rai’s party the leaders of major political parties are excited to hold the election on the stipulated time. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Parsa, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal has said that nobody could stop the Constituent Assembly election declared for November 19.

It is the common responsibility of all of us to make the election successful as it is being held to institutionalize the democracy and to draft a federal democratic republican constitution, he said.

Stating that the parties in the High Level Political Committee could be accommodative to the poll-opposing parties including the CPN-Maoist on all other issues except deferring the election date and changing the current government, Khanal appealed to the poll-opposing parties to participate in the election without any precondition for framing a federal democratic constitution.
