Election Constituency Delineation Commission formally starts work; NC leader Koirala calls for timely polls


KATHMANDU: As the government announced the election of the Constituency Assembly for November 19, the Election Constituency Delineation Commission has formally started its work from Tuesday after its chairman and the members were sworn in on Tuesday– 12 days after the panel was announced.

Chairman of the commission Tahir Ali Anasari, who is former Supreme Court judge, was sworn in by acting chief justice Damodar Sharma. Ansari later administered the oath of office to the members of the commission.

The commission comprises geologist Netra Dhital, sociologist Dambar Chemjong, public administration expert Madhu Nidhi Tiwari and secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister Raju Man Singh Malla (as member secretary).

The government had announced the commission on June 14, asking it to delineate 240 election constituencies for first-past-the-post elections in 30 days. The commission had not started its work due confusion over who should administer oath to the chairman. Ansari had reportedly refused to start work without being sworn in

Meanwhile addressing a program organized in Dhankuta. Nepali Congress (NC) leader Sujata Koirala said that the nation would be pushed towards a state of peril if the government cannot conduct the Constituent Assembly (CA) election on time.

Koirala said CA election is very essential as it is only through the constitution that the rights of the indigenous, Madhesis, women and other marginalized groups would be secured. She urged everyone to lend support for the upcoming CA election.

Moreover, Koirala said that the democratic forces should be strengthened in the upcoming election as they are the only ones who can complete the constitution.
