Development partners stress for impartiality of Development assistance

KATHMANDU: The development partners in Nepal have expressed their commitment to the principle of ‘strict impartiality in the ongoing electoral process in Nepal for the upcoming November 19 polls.

Issuing a press release on behalf of the development partners, the UN in Nepal emphasized that their assistance must not be diverted for any political purposes and that the development resources cannot be used for political purposes.

“Development assistance from the above mentioned Development Partners is intended to improve the lives of Nepal’s poor and excluded people, whoever or wherever they are; it is vital that this assistance can continue even in an election environment,” the statement said, adding that complementary to this assistance, development partners will also provide neutral technical support to Nepal’s electoral process, as part of their ongoing and committed support to Nepal’s peace process.

Furthermore, in keeping with the principle of impartiality, development partners said they expect their staff and partner organizations to also remain impartial at all times and particularly so in an electoral environment and appealed to all concerned actors in Nepal to “understand, respect and support this impartiality”.

The principles are very much intended in the spirit of the Election Commission of Nepal’s own electoral Code of Conduct, in particular Chapter 4 relating to Non-Governmental Organizations, according to the statement.
