Dahal preparing proposal for extended plenum; Thakur confident about Nov. 19 poll

KAVRE: As the design of party vice chairperson Dr. Baburam Bhattari to resign from all the party posts has created earthquake within the party and exerted moral pressure to party president to step down, UCPN-Maoist Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal has reached Dhulikhel in Kavre district, to finalize an organizational proposal to be presented at the party’s upcoming extended plenum .

According to his personal secretariat, Dahal is at Hotel Horizon to write the proposal that would address the controversy of party appointments along with other issues within the party. The Central Committee (CC) meeting of the party had called for an extended plenum starting from July 19.

The CC meeting ended a few days ago, without any major breakthrough as the meeting has been marred by controversies over the proposal of making appointment on different party positions and resignation of party vice-chairperson. Dr. Bhattarai has given the post of vice chairperson as there was controversy over the proposed nominations of the party. Party chairperson is mulling to form a suitable structure to incorporate vice-chairperson in the party structure after party vice-chairperson turned down the request of reconsider his decision. Party leaders are of the view that the decision of the party vice-chairperson would affect the election of the constituent assembly scheduled for November 19.

In another development, addressing a press meet in the Capital on Thursday, Chairperson of Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party Mahantha Thakur said that the elections can’t be put off just because of intimidation threats from some political parties.

Thakur also claimed that the Constituent Assembly election on November 19 is unavoidable and that his party would actively participate. “In our villages, even the fishes are killed with bombs. We are not, therefore, scared of bombs and the threats of bombs. Election will happen at any cost,” Thakur told journalists.

Thakur said he and the Madhesi Front are not yet decided whether to form an electoral coalition with the UCPN-Maoist. He also informed that they will reach in some decision about the electoral alliance. He also added that they are mulling to win 50 percent seats in the upcoming elections of the constituent assembly. Thakur’s party won 21 seats in the last CA.
