CPN-UML condemns Karki’s appointment; 33-parties announce protest including bandh against appointment

KATHMANDU: Although former Chief Secretary Lokman Singh Karki was appointed as the chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) as per the recommendation of four major political parties, CPN-UML, one of the parties of the alliance, has condemned the appointment.

Issuing a press statement immediately after Karki’s swearing-in at the President’s Office, the UML said the appointment is lamentable as it was done in spite of strong objection from the parties and that it is against the spirit of the people’s movement-II.

Meanwhile, majority of the central leaders of the UML criticized the party leadership for giving their consent initially to the recommendation to appoint Karki as CIAA chief and failing to play strong role to stop the appointment after the party formally opposed his nomination.

Meanwhile, the alliance of 33 agitating parties led by Mohan Baidya’s CPN-Maoist, which has protested against the Chief Justice led government, has declared protest against Karki’s appointment. A meeting of the leaders of the 33 parties held at CPN-M central office in Buddanagar decided to carry out protests including a nationwide general strike.

The meeting of the fringe parties decided to call the general strike on May 13 and support the Valley bandh by the student wings in protest of the appointment of Lokman Karki as the chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

Likewise, the party also decided to picket the office of the President on Thursday afternoon organizing a rally from Lainchaur and organize an effigy rally and burn effigies on Friday at Ratnapark. Likewise on Saturday, the fringe parties are scheduled to organise torch rallies from Sundhara and support the Valley bandh by the student wings on Sunday.
