POKHARA: At a time when the major political parties and the government have been preparing for holding the elections of the constituent assembly on November 19, a majority of CPN-Maoist central members who spoke on the third day of the party’s ongoing Central Committee meeting suggested that the party should be ready to take any initiative to foil the Constituent Assembly poll.
Leaders have supported Chairman Mohan Baidya’s proposal of boycotting the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections. At the much-awaited CC meeting which, according to observers, will determine whether national politics will head toward peace or confrontation, most of the speakers have urged the party to come up with definite programs for election boycott. The meeting started Saturday.
“Not a single leader speaking during Monday’s meeting opposed Chairman Baidya’s proposal,” party spokesperson Pampha Bhusal told media persons after the meeting. Party leaders who spoke during Sunday’s meeting also supported Baidya’s proposal to the hilt.
“As we are a communist party, revolt is our first priority. We know very well that state power cannot be achieved without revolt,” Bhusal said, adding “If the four major political parties and the government suppress our agitation, we shall go for revolt.”
She, however, clarified that the party would not resort to armed rebellion, but would be from the street and parliament.
CC members at the meeting argued that the party has to embrace a tit-for-tat policy. “If the government treats us with soft policy, we shall do the same. But if the government takes harsh action, we shall retaliate,” they added.
The CC meeting will conclude today after finalizing the strategy of the party in the changed political context. In today’s meeting leaders will put forth their views on the three papers presented by party leaders. After all the leaders express their views, General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa and Secretary Netra Bikram Chand will furnish answers to questions over the documents presented. Baidya had presented his political document, Thapa program of organizational struggle and Chand had presented document on military formations for concluding the ‘people’s revolt’ on the basis of the ‘people’s war’.
