BY N24 STAFF WRITER, KATHMANDU:- A football player called up for closed training of the national team has been found to be infected with the coronavirus. The spokesperson of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) Kiran Rai informed that corona infection has been confirmed in a player sitting in quarantine.
Last Monday and Tuesday, ANFA conducted a PCR test by collecting swabs of 34 players, 12 staff members and eight officials of the national football team for the World Cup qualifiers and Asian Cup qualifiers. Rai said that the PCR reports of 53 of those tested were negative.
He said that one of the players tested positive for PCR again. ANFA conducted swab tests on Monday, including 25 for 11 players and for 28 on Tuesday. ANFA is discussing whether to keep the players in isolation at home or take them to the hospital. Earlier, Corona was confirmed in a cricketer and squash coach in Nepal. For the first time, corona infection has been seen in football players.
A test conducted at Patan Hospital showed a corona in the football player. ANFA had placed 11 players from outside Kathmandu in quarantine and hotel while others were asked to stay in isolation at home. After the infected player’s PCR report came positive on Thursday, ANFA has stated that he again tested positive today.
“After the FIFA decided not to play any of the remaining matches of the 2020 World Cup qualifiers, the closed training scheduled for August 17 has been postponed,” said Rai. Nepal had three games left to play in the second round of the World Cup qualifiers. Nepal was scheduled to play the remaining matches against Chinese Taipei, Australia, and Jordan in Nepal.
Nepal had planned to start training for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and the Asian Cup in China in 2023. So far, Nepal has three points from five games. Nepal is in the fourth position of the group after defeating Chinese Taipei. Australia tops the group.
