Contentious issues will be resolved soon: Bhattarai

KATHMANDU: UCPN (Maoist) leader Baburam Bhattarai has said the disputed issues of constitution drafting will be resolved very soon.

Leader Bhattarai, who also heads the Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee of the Constituent Assembly (CA), said so a week before the expiry of deadline for consensus on the contentious issues of constitution.

According to the constitution drafting calendar, the disputed issues of the new constitution should be settled by September 6.

During a press meet at Constituent Assembly building in Nayabaneshwor, assured that the CA members would work day and night to forge consensus on the disputed issues by September 6.

“We will be focusing our efforts towards forging agreement on the state restructuring and forms of government,” said leader Bhattarai. “Unlike yesterdays, we will be working day and night. There will be agreement.”

He claimed that the CPN-Maoist, which is not represented in the CA, was also close to consensus. “We are holding talks with CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya, we are close to agreement,” said Bhattarai.

Saying that the major political parties have agreed to sit for roundtable conference as demanded raised by the CPN-Maoist, Bhattarai said discussions regarding the modality of the assembly are being held.

“Major parties have agreed to convene the all-party assembly. The meeting can be called immediately once the parties finalise its modality and mandate,” said Bhattarai.
