Contempt of Court Case filed against journalists of Kantipur

KATHMANDU: Nepali media has played important role during various pro-democracy movements of the country and have been instrumental for ensuring people right to freedom of expression and opinion but there have been attempts to curtail such fundamental rights of people. In such an attempt Advocate Arjun Kumar Pokharel has filed a contempt of court case at the Supreme Court (SC) against columnist Bijaya Kumar Pandey, editor-in-chief Sudhir Sharma and Managing Director Kailash Sirohiya of Kantipur Daily on Monday alleging that an article written by Pandey that was published in the daily made mockery of the SC.

In his petition advocate Pokhrel claimed that in his recent article Pandey tried to scandalise the independent judiciary. He accused Pandey of contempt of court for his comments on the judiciary and judges regarding the recent disputes on dress code at the SC. The writ claims that Kumar’s recent article ‘Pad ra Pahichan ko Mahaan Antar’, a weekly dose of his regular column ‘Aadhi Ityadhi’ impeached the court. The column of Pandey is very popular as he makes very good analysis of political situation of the country.

Earlier, a week ago a Kantipur correspondent was barred to visit the courtrooms citing his informal dress. The advocate has demanded one year imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fines from the defendants in his writ. However the Court is yet to react on the case. The government, which is functioning against the norms of Rule of Law and Check and Balance is trying to tighten the screw against media and civil society to cover its wrong doings.
