Congress core has a lead rallying figure in K B
STAFF WRITER, KATHMANDU: Sushil Koirala left this world an upright man never compromising over “nation, nationalism and democratic socialism” much like his Sandaju BP. Someone who perhaps knew what he can expect by chasing nationalist agenda he had famously said ” I know”.
The instance whereby he had billed the role played by Indian Consul General based in Birgunj as against the interest of Nepal is only one of the cases in point. While he was trolled for it on social media it is not surprising to find he is being eulogized soon after his death.
A nationalist, he choose to lose to K P Oli something that reminds of what B P stood for and went on too pick Kul Bahadur Gurung for ceremonial president. KB figures in major political battles with one titanic development being abolition of monarchy while he was speaker of the constituent assembly in 2008.
With his death, the nation, democracy and territorial integrity is without a father figure around. In the forefront meanwhile are Ram Chandra Paudel and Sher Bahadur Deuba both of whom played controversial role in the ratification of Mahakali treaty in 1996.
Coincidentally, the prime minister of the country is K P Sharma Oli who too had backed the ratification of the treaty sending impression that Nepal can expect billions if the treaty is passed given the prospect. It cannot get more ominous than this.
However every ominous development has someone waiting in the wings to take on the challenge just as every cloud has silver lining and that father figure is K B. How fast the Congress core has come to realization that KB can not only take on the challenges but also can safeguard nation, nationalism and political ideology.
Koirala family is now grappling with crisis and in the need to convert sorrow into strength. Hope lies in the fact that the party still has a man like KB who is keeping a hawk eye on nation at a crucial juncture and looking beyond Sher Bahadur Deuba, Ram Chandra Paudel and PM Oli put together. He can lead the Congress rally too.
Deuba has long been seen a a new avatar of Parshu Narayan Chaudhari and Dr Tulsi Giri put together while Ram Chandra Paudel and PM Oli need no introduction in the light of what is unspooling since long time. He was in political exile after 1960 coup and had returned only with BP in 1976.
KB is someone who is the senior most Congress leader around, with career going back to 1950s. Elected from Ilam in a number of elections, he was the one who chaired the constituent assembly first meeting that announced abolition of monarchy amid tremendous traffic in corridors of power.
Now he is apparently bracing up to arguably the biggest role he ever played. With Congress party in disarray and no one around to shoulder nationalist agenda after B P, G P and Sushil Da, the next man on national scene is KB. Extraordinary situation demands extraordinary men at the helm.
Apparently, the planned general convention of the Congress party is now expected to go into a spin for a while. It could get feverish given what is involved and who is rooting for Paudel and Deuba and why. The entry of a old giant into the ring is likely raise the stake. Over to Congress and rank and file, who can be expected to debate the issues involved and make a right choice.
