Climbing Mt Everest is my passion and I will continue to do so: Kami Rita Sherpa

KATHMANDU: “Do not ask how many times you will climb Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world. I will continue scaling Mt Everest, and this is my passion,” said Kami Rita Sherpa while recounting his story on the recent 24th ascents to Mt Everest.
Untiring mountaineer Sherpa said this after he was welcomed at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Saturday. He had recently reached atop the mountain for the 24th time, breaking his own record in scaling the world’s highest peak.
When asked how he felt after achieving the feat, he shared that he was so happy and felt pride, and his health condition was also good.
“The weather on the peak was good and it supported me and my team this time around. And as a result, the climbing became a success,” he said. He was accompanied by his spouse Lyakpa Sherpa, who was also apparently happy at Kami Rita’s success.

He was welcomed in the terminal premises of the airport and a cultural procession was also held to acknowledge his success. In attendance on the occasion were the office bearers of the Nepal Mountaineering Association including President Santabir Lama, General Secretary Kul Bahadur Gurung, Secretary Timaram Gurung and former president Ang Tshering Sherpa.

Born in Thame village of Solukhumbu district, Kami Rita, 49, climbed the Mt Everest for the first time in 1994. He earlier had announced retirement after reaching atop the highest peak for the 25th time.
