KATHMANDU: The recommendation of Constitutional Council to recommend controversial figure Lokman Singh Karki as the chief of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) received protest from different quarters.
The UML-aligned All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU) enforced hour-long ‘chakkajam’ (vehicular strike) in front of government colleges across the country on Monday to protest the decision of the Constitutional Council.
The student unions burnt the effigies of Karki and Chair of the Interim Election Council, Khil Raj Regmi, who is also the chair of the Constitutional Council to oppose the decision.
Civil society representatives have also come to the street protesting the decision of Constitutional Council to recommend Karki for the top post of the anti-graft watchdog. Civil society representative on Sunday itself met President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and requested him to block the process as Karki played important role to suppress the People’s movement of 2006.
Meanwhile, Civil servants have taken to the streets in dress code to protest against the recommendation to appoint Karki as the chief of CIAA.
The civil employees who came out on the streets under the banner of Federation of Nepali Professionals chanting slogans such as “take action against corrupt Lokman Singh, withdraw the recommendation for his appointment.” Teachers, engineers, health workers, employees of District Development Committee, Department of Road and Attorney General’s Office, among others, participated in the protest.
Police personnel have been heavily deployed around Babarmahal where the civil employees have been staging the protest. The road leading to Singha Durbar has been obstructed.
