CIAA continues crusade against corruption; 35 Govt. officials arrested on charge of corruption


KATHMANDU: Continuing its crackdown on government employees involved in corruption, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Friday arrested 35 officials of the Department of foreign employment (DoFE) and Department of immigration (DoI) on charge of irregularities.

According to the ant-graft body, 13 have been arrested from the Labour Unit of the Foreign Employment Department and four from the final approval unit of the same department. Likewise, 18 more were arrested from the Immigration Department. Only recently, five people were arrested from the Immigration Department.

Issuing a press statement, Spokesperson for the CIAA Sridhar Sapkota informed that DOFE officials were involved in a scam to grant permission to 77 persons for the overseas job issuing the papers forged by the manpower agencies on behalf of the latter were fake. The immigration officials arrested Friday were deputed at the Tribhuvan International Airport. The CIAA has been finding it difficult to detain officials as many government employees were arrested on charge of corruption.

“The detainees have been kept into the custody and the investigation process will be started shortly,” spokesperson Sapkota said. The CIAA has been actively performing its duties after former Chief Secretary Lokman Singh Karki as the Chief Commissioner of the anti-graft watchdog. Immediately after assuming his post, the Chief of CIAA has vowed to take zero tolerance policy against corruption. There is rampant corruption in the country due to frail law and order situation of the country and the anti-graft watchdog remained almost defunct before the appointment of Karki.
