
KATHMANDU: A team of six Chinese experts today arrived in Kathmandu to assess and observe the efforts so far done by Nepal in order to remove the blockage in the Sunkoshi River after a massive landslide at Ramche-5 of Sindhupalchowk early this month.
The technical team comprising geologists, hydrologists and engineers today hold consultations with Nepali experts at the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding ways to clear the blockage.
A Nepali technical team presented a detailed PowerPoint presentation about the geology of landslide area, efforts so far done by Nepal in clearing debris and drain out the waters from an artificial dam created after landslides, according to a home ministry official. Technical experts of the Nepali Army, geologists from Tribhuvan University and government officials made the presentation.
The Chinese team said that the efforts made so far by Nepali experts were positive. The Chinese team is also going to make an on-field visit of the landslide area, according to the official. Earlier, a compact technical team from India had also visited Nepal and observed the landslide area in the Sunkoshi River and suggested that Nepal’s effort to make controlled outflow of blocked river was good. Immediately after the landslide on August 2, Nepal government had decided to seek technical help from India and China to drain out the water. A foreign ministry official said both teams were here for the research purpose only.
Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff Gen Gaurav SJB Rana today visited the areas affected by landslides in Ramche, Sindhupalchowk, and took stock of rescue as well as others efforts being carried out to remove the blockage.
