CEC Upreti meets IEC chair Regmi; expresses confidence for timely polls

KATHMANDU: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nilkantha Upreti has informed that the parties cannot halt the election for any reason.

Speaking at a program in the Capital on Tuesday Upreti informed that lack of consensus among the political parties has been delaying the electoral process as they failed to promulgate the electoral laws for the poll.

He went on to say that the Commission is ready to hold elections by November, adding that for that they have to forge consensus on some key electoral issues. Upreti underscored that the poll date will be announced within May and noted that the 33 disgruntled parties including the CPN-Maoist led by Mohan Baidhya should be brought on board at the earliest. The Baidya faction has been softening its stance towards the government as the party is losing public support gradually for opposing the polls.

Meanwhile, CEC Upreti called on Chairperson of the Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The duo discussed the issue of announcing the election date for holding the new election of the constituent assembly and formulation of electoral related laws. Chairman Regmi urged the CEC to expedite the ongoing voters’ name registration process and to conclude other tasks related to the election as soon as possible.

During the meeting, Regmi and Upreti also discussed the ways of incorporating suggestions given by different political parties on various provisions of the election ordinance.
