Cabinet mulls setting up transitional justice mechanism


KATHMANDU:
Following the arrest of Colonel Kumar Lama in the UK on the charge of torture during war period, the government has intensified preparation on the formation of the much-anticipated mechanisms for addressing the transitional justice.
The government is preparing to move ahead to set up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Disappearances in a bid to investigate into the human rights violation cases of the war era.
The cabinet meeting underway at the Singhadurbar is discussing upon the formation of commissions, according to a Minister present at the meeting. Earlier yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has also consulted the President Dr Ram Baran Yadav about the formation of transitional justice mechanisms informing the latter about the recent arrest of Colonel Lama in the UK.
Following the meeting, PM Dr Bhattarai has informed the journalists that the he discussed with the head of the state on setting up the commissions to address the past cases of human rights violations.
