Budget ordinance plan put off

KATHMANDU:
The government attempt to bring the full-fledged budget ordinance has been foiled after the President hinted that he wouldn’t endorse any ordinance that comes to his table without the political consensus and the opposition parties’ warning of stern protest against government unilateral plans to unveil budget.
The government was mulling over introducing the full-fledged budge on Monday through an ordinance.
As per the plan to bring the budget ordinance, Finance Minister Barshaman Pun ‘Ananta’ went to meet President Ram Baran Yadav on Monday to apprise him about the government’s preparation of budget. However, the President directed Minister Pun to wait for a political consensus among the parties to bring the budget ordinance. President Yadav also indicated that he wouldn’t endorse the ordinance that comes without the political consensus.
Following the meeting, FM Pun told media persons that Chairman of his party was taking the initiative to seeking a broader consensus for the solution of various problems including that of the budget.
The cabinet meeting scheduled to bring the full fledged budget today put off.
Today’s meeting of the Council of Ministers has been postponed in order to forge a political consensus on the budget, said Finance Minister Barshaman Pun.
However, the government is now planning to bring the budget on November 16, Prime Minister Office source said.

Earlier today, UCPN (Maoist) had held a meeting with Nepali Congress, CPN (UML) in a bid to forge consensus. However, the meeting ended inconclusively after Maoist sought Congress and UML’s consent on government’s budget plan and opposition parties declined to support government on budget and demanded for a package deal. They also warned for a stern protest if government brought budget unilaterally.
