BRI would be signed during the upcoming President visit: Minister Gyawali

KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali on Sunday said that the state visit of President Bidya Devi Bhandari to China was going to be significant in several ways.
President Bhandari is embarking on her first state visit to China on Wednesday. It will be the first state visit of the Head of State of Nepal after Nepal became a federal democratic republic.
Although no major agreement on BRI would be signed during the upcoming visit, Gyawali said, letter of exchange on important projects could take place. Speaking at the sixth edition of Gorkhapatra Round Table, Minister Gyawali revealed that President Bhandari’s State visit would be reciprocated with a high level visit from China at any time in the near future. President Bhandari would invite Chinese President Xi Jinping to pay a visit to Nepal.
Gyawali said Nepal had to grab global attention to fill up the investment gap and share the domestic achievements with the global community. He said there would be an investment gap of 5 to 6 billion dollars for next three years to meet the target of upgrading the nation from the status of the least developed country to the developing country.
“As we know, the investors always seek for better environment and place to invest which we have now. So, it is time to speak loud to grab the attention in the international forum,” he added.
Gyawali said domestic resources are not enough to address current development need. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is required and global attention is essential to achieve FDI, he said. “Government had constructed legal and structural foundation for the development in its first year and concentrated its effort for effective delivery,” he said.
Expecting that the report of the Eminent Persons Group of Nepal and India would receive appropriate response after the Indian election end, the Minister said that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli would visit Vietnam and Cambodia to observe the rapid development made by the two nations.
He has the opinion that VIP’s visit and national participation in international forum would play a vital role to strengthen the profile. He said the task had begun from Prime Minister KP Sharna Oli’s participation in Davos conference and continued with the government’s initiation to organize Investment Summit and Asia Pacific Summit.
