Body of WA trekker believed found

Police in Nepal are investigating whether human remains uncovered near personal items owned by missing Perth man Matthew Allpress are those of the 23-year-old, who went missing six months ago while on a trek in the Annapurna region.

A statement today on the Find Matt website, which was formed by Mr Allpress’s friends to raise funds for the search, said two local Nepalese people foraging in the mountains above Sikles village had found human remains on Saturday.

On Sunday, four Nepalese police and an Annapurna Conservation Area Project officer visited the site, and reported finding items of personal equipment which belonged to Mr Allpress.

“The police are still at the site today gathering information. Matthew’s mother is in Nepal, and his father arrives today,” the statement said.

“There is little information available at present. Matt’s family and close friends ask for respect at this difficult time.”

Mr Allpress’ mother Margaret returned to Nepal last month ahead of the six month anniversary of her son’s disappearance, and told The West Australian last month she was not giving up hope.

Mr Allpress, a Curtin University graphic design graduate, disappeared on November 3 after setting out alone on an Annapurna Circuit trek, including the 5500m Thorong La Pass. (RHIANNA KING The West Australian)
