Bhikkhu Dr Gyanpurnik no more

KATHMANDU: The Sanghanayaka Dr. Bhikkhu Gyanpurnik Mahasthaveer Aggamahapandit has passed away this morning.

The renowned Bhikhkhu was 81 and he breathed his last while under treatment at Sumeru Hospital at Dhapakhel. He was suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney ailment since long. The Sanghanayaka has made an unparalleled contribution to the promotion of Buddha education and Vipasyana, Bhikkhu Nigrodha said. He had been admitted to Sumeru Hospital two months back and was put into ICU a month ago. Bhikkhu Gyanpurnik had been undergoing dialysis for six months. Physicians Rishi Kumar Kafle and Bikram Shakya were involved in his treatment. Bhikkhu Aggamahapandit has authored 60 books on the Buddha dharma. He was also the former chair of the Dharmodaya Sabha. He had been conferred the degree of an honorary doctorate by Mahachulalongkorn University and the Mahamukuta University of Thailand. The Aggamahapandit was also the seventh Sanghanayaka of Theravada Buddhism. Prayers and worship were performed in nearly 300 Buddhist monasteries throughout the country wishing for his health recovery. Bhikkhu Nigrodha said that the details about Bhikkhu Aggamahapandit’s last rites would be decided this afternoon.
