Bhattarai agrees to be ‘Senior Leader’ of UCPN-Maoist

KATHMANDU: With a view to settle a hierarchy row within the party after Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai resigned from his post, UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has proposed making Bhattarai a senior leader of the party.

Leader Dr. Bhattarai, who earlier expressed his reservation over the portfolio of senior leader, has finally agreed to take up the position of Senior leader. The position, according to party leaders, is non-executive. Bhattarai has publicly said that he would not hold an executive post in the party.

The development follows party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s meeting on Tuesday with senior leaders, former Standing Committee members and the bureau in-charge, where he proposed making Bhattarai a senior leader. The former prime minister, Bhattarai recently stepped down as the party’s vice-chairman following dispute among party leaders for different posts. There is dispute in the party for the position after the party joined the political mainstream leaving the decade long armed insurgency.

Such a position would mean Bhattarai will be senior to the vice-chairmen, the general secretary and four secretaries. “I personally don’t have any desire to hold the post of a senior leader, but if the party officially takes such a decision, I will accept it,” leader Devendra Poudel, who is close to Bhattarai, quoted the former PM as saying in the meeting.

According to Poudel, Bhattarai is under pressure from his own camp and the Dahal faction to accept the senior leader’s position and play an active role in the party, especially when the Constituent Assembly (CA) election is round the corner.

Bhattarai has proposed that all office-bearers except Chairman Dahal should continue as central committee members until the forthcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections. Bhattarai made this proposal to end power seeking tendency of the party leaders. Bhattarai´s proposal, however, has irked the faction led by Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha as well as party Secretary Post Bahadur Bogati. The Shrestha faction has maintained that Bhattarai floated his stance to minimize Shrestha´s role in the party.
