KATHMANDU: Malware attack has been used to hack the banking system in order to steal approximately 20 million crore rupees from Nepal. The accused, who were arrested under the search operation of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Division, Teku, revealed that the master mind of the attack was directing the task from Spain.
According to the one of the police authority, “Although the principal conspirator resides in Spain, they are identified as Chinese nationals as well”. The Chinese hackers are identified to be Zhu Liang, Wick Win, Qi Yangying, Lu Jialing and Lin Jinming. They flew to Kathmandu via Air China flight on Friday evening. During the investigation, they said that they were merely doing the task for someone else for money.
The police have also arrested another Chinese national from the airport with the help of CCTV footage. It was for the first time in Nepal for majority of them. They further disclosed that according to the agreement with the principal conspirator, their plan was to rob off millions of cash from ATM on Saturday and shift somewhere else from Hotel Monahar where they were originally staying. Their return ticket to China was scheduled for Sunday.
As per the agreement, their ticketing and accommodation was booked online from abroad. Investigating authority says, “The hackers in Spain must have done all these arrangements, we have started looking into it very carefully.”
Among the arrested, Liang has been found to be communicating to the conspirator in Spain. He is also responsible for installing the code received from abroad in a fake ATM card. “After the installation, everything was activated outside”, says one of the investigating officer,
According to the authority, they were divided into two groups to accomplish the mission. However, after an unusual transaction was observed from the ATM of Nabil Bank, the police have intercepted their operation.
Nepal Bankers Association says the hackers have attacked in the switch of banking system. Thus, they successfully stole 17 million 400 thousand Nepali Rupees. However, they confirmed that the money was not withdrawn from public accounts. Among the total amount, the police have recovered 12 million 629 thousand. It is suspected that rest of the money is in the possession of other three who are still being searched.
The case has been registered under the Banking offense/crime. More important information is expected to reveal after the statement of the accused is taken.
