Anti-graft watchdog CIAA to have offices in five development regions

KATHMANDU: At a time corruption is rampant in the country, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), an anti-graft watchdog of the country, has decided to strengthen its teeth to curb rampant corruption on the country.

The cabinet has decided to open offices of the CIAA in all 5 development regions of the country. The cabinet took a decision to this effect taking note of the fact that official corruption is on a rise in Nepal.

As of today, the government’s anti-corruption body is limited to Kathmandu valley only, but has been discharging duties at the local level with the help of 75 District Administration Offices. However the role of Chief District Officer as the focal person of the anti-graft watchdog did not became effective as they were involved in corruption.

The government is planning to set up regional offices of CIAA in Dipayal, Surkhet, Pokhara, Hetauda and Dhankuta. Civil service remained a charm for many people despite not having competitive salary package as most of the civil servants are involved in corruption.

“How a civil servant of officer rank can make a house in the Capital after meeting his family expenses as their salary is below 30 thousand rupees, which is a testimony that corruption is rampant in the country,” says a member of civil society. A recent report of Transparency International has categorized Nepal as most corrupt country and political parties are the most corrupt institutions. The CIAA has taken some bold steps after Lokman Singh Karki has assumed the portfolio of Chief Commissioner of the CIAA.
