By N24 Correspondent, KATHMANDU:- Almost every day, the Chinese Ministry Of Foreign Affairs is spitting venom against the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)’s development project in Nepal, which was signed between the U.S. and Nepal in 2017.
The MCC compact has been tabled in Nepal’s parliament for approval, but China has not yet refrained meddling in the bilateral agreement, where China is not at all a party. Nepal’s ultra communists comprised of NCP (Maoist) and NCP (Unified Socialist) are eager to invite China’s interference in sovereign Nepal’s independent foreign policy and groom China’s wild ego in Nepal. Yet another communist party, which boasts of being the largest party – NCP (UML) – prefers to remain deaf and dumb in such a crucial junction of the MCC’s implementation.
As for China’s role in Nepal, China likes to appear as Nepal’s good friend, but in essence, China has been playing the role of a feudal chieftain, whose sole motive is to mislead Nepalese people, oppress them as the loan predator and exploit Nepal’s natural resources for the maximum benefit of China, not Nepal.
China has imposed unofficial blockade on Kerung and Kodari trade routes of Nepal, which are connected with Tibet. Bilateral trade is only for namesake, as nobody knows when those customs points would open and close. Chinese businessmen and hackers, allegedly sponsored by China’s state mechanism, are involved in Nepal’s banking and financial scams. Yet they are released and sent back to China without a scratch.
Chinese nationals smuggle gold to and from Nepal, just like North Koreans do. Even some diplomats of both the communist countries were allegedly doing this illegal activity in Nepal. In Chinese construction and development works in Nepal, China only allows contractors and workers from China. Nepalese are deprived of employment in their projects.
The much touted Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China, to which Nepal is a party, has very high interest rate ranging from 20 to 30 percent. And if Nepal fails to pay the full loan amount that BRI offers, China intends to capture Nepal’s state resources, including Nepal’s only international airport – the Tribhuvan International Airport – in Kathmandu.
By ignoring all filthy intentions of China in Nepal, Nepal’s so-called communists are still up for state capture this way or the other. China is also provoking Nepal’s communists for state capture, as Nepal’s communists are the most loyal forces of China and whose motive is to lick the boots of the Chinese expansionists and imperialists without a question.
Lipulekh and other territories of north west Nepal stills belong to Nepal, but China even joined hand with India to distribute those territories between China and India. It’s a vindication Nepal’s two neighbors China and India are not for Nepal’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as they are only looking for their own vested interests.
This is where Nepal needs a genuine tie and friendship with the United States and Europe as well. The U.S. MCC project is solely a development project based on a contract. But China has made it a big issue in Nepal spreading fake propaganda, so that it would not be implemented.
Nepal wants to maintain a balanced foreign policy with all friendly countries. That’s why, Nepal not only needs China and India, but the U.S., Britain, Germany and France as well. China and India have to come out of their narrow mindedness and try to see the world through the wide open eyes vis-a-vis their Nepal policy.
It may be tough for them to see Nepal exercising sovereignty, but that is how Nepal can maintain its balanced policy in the world. Just like Nepal has signed the Chinese BRI, Nepal has signed the American MCC. It’s Nepal’s choice and Nepal’s foreign policy – China has to be able to digest this fact.
By calling and threatening Nepal’s parliamentarians and politicians to stand against MCC, attempts to distribute money to them and influence their vote in the parliament is not going to help anymore. China has to refrain from what it has been indulging in Nepal. Nepal is not China’s playground. The only option left for China is to let the Nepalese people decide freely, as to what they really want about the MCC or any other development project, which may turn crucial in positively changing Nepal’s fate and face in the coming days.
