7 killed,13 injured in fire at Nepalese restaurant in Hong Kong
N24 Correspondent, HONG KONG:- Seven people, including a nine-year-old boy, have died in a fire at a Nepaliese restaurant in Jordan, Hong Kong. Thirteen people have been injured.
The fire started at around 8 pm while a group of Nepalis were celebrating a birthday party at the restaurant. Four men and three women were killed in the blaze. They are 9 to 40 years old.
The condition of seven of the injured is critical. One has been discharged.
Most of the victims are from Baglung district. There is a large population of Nepalis in the area.
Hong Kong’s chief executive Carrie Lam has expressed regret over the incident. Authorities have also been instructed to help the injured and find out the cause of the fire.
Locals in the area told police after the incident that most of the rented buildings in the area did not have fire extinguishers.
The flats do not have enough running fountains and places. This has caused more damage, according to government officials. According to the news agency AP, those who had gathered there were trapped in the back of the kitchen.
Police also said that the restaurant was operated without permission and there was no signboard outside.
Locals have demanded monitoring of the rented buildings after the incident. Hong Kong MP Vincent Chin Wing-sun told local media, “Many of the older buildings in the area do not have fire-fighting equipment.
