33-party alliance rules out election under present Govt.; UCPN-Maoist unveils a ‘Production Brigade’


KATHMANDU: One day after the CPN-Maoist led 33-party alliance and the High Level Political Committee, have agreed in principal to hold the round-table conference for resolving all the disputes related with the elections of the constituent assembly, Chairperson of CPN-Maoist Mohan Baidya has made it clear that he will only participate in the Constituent Assembly (CA) election scheduled for November 19 if the current Chief Justice-led government is dissolved.

He also made it clear that his party will not accept the interim election government led by Khil Raj Regmi and the date slated for Constituent Assembly elections. However, leaders of four major political parties have been saying that they would not fulfill these two demands. The leaders have also been saying that they would go for the election even without participation from the CPN-Maoist.

“We won’t compromise under the status quo and can’t accept the current government and election date of November 19,” he added. He said that his party is firm on its stand on the formation of a partisan government through the proposed roundtable conference to ensure the elections. However, the procedures, nature and the agendas of the meet are yet to be finalized

Saying that the roundtable talks will be based on the 18-point charter of demands put forth by his party, Baidya said no one can run away from the conference.

“Now, the agreement should be forged in real. The roundtable is meant for a national consensus. The understanding reached between the political parties so far is positive. We will try to move the talks in positive direction,” he added.

He however said that the alliance of 33-parties CPN-Maoist leads is currently engaged in serious discussion and exercise to make the upcoming round-table conference a success.

Meanwhile, the UCPN-Maoist unveiled a ‘Production Brigade’ on Friday, which the party has said that will be deployed for the elections of the constituent assembly.

The party announced the brigade as per the proposal endorsed by the seventh national assembly of the party held in Hetauda on February 2-6 last year in a bid to boost production and entrepreneurship in the country. Chairperson of UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal announced the body under the leadership of former YCL Kaski district chief and YCL central secretariat member Deepak Koirala amidst a function here this morning.

The brigade, named as Annapurna Production Brigade, comprised of various former members of the Youth Communist League as members. The party, which has been facing criticism for its unruly activities, has been trying to improve its image to the public before the elections of the constituent assembly otherwise there is no relations between production brigade and elections of the constituent assembly.
