33-parties appeal Intl. community not to support poll; terms the support as interference

KATHMANDU: At a time when efforts are on to bring all the dissenting parties on board for holding the elections of the constituent assembly, the alliance of 33 parties, which have been opposing the elections announced by the Chief Justice led government, has appealed all international community not to interfere in the internal matters of Nepal and eschew supporting the purported Constituent Assembly election.

An open letter issued on behalf the 33 parties stated that this election which has been termed as the election to the Constituent Assembly and which has been declared without the political consensus among the parties would not give an outlet to the nation but invite even greater national crisis.

The open letter signed by CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung expressed concerns over some foreign diplomatic missions’ recent statements over the constitution-drafting, Constituent Assembly and election. He also claimed that these activities are interference to the Nepal’s internal matter and against the UN charter, principles of Panchasheel and international diplomatic norms. “At present, we all have felt the activities and interference of international agencies,” the letter added.

Election without the participation of all political parties would have no relevance and we urge the friendly countries and the donor agencies to stop all kinds of assistance to be provided for the election purpose, the letter added.

The letter also stated that the Constituent Assembly cannot bail out the country from crisis and weakened the national sovereignty and democracy as it was announced without political agreement.

“Thus, we appeal to the friendly countries and donor agencies to stop all the support to the Constituent Assembly election at the current state of affairs. We appeal to all the diplomatic agencies not to support the election which does not ensure the new constitution but is going to be held at the stake of national sovereignty and democratic system,” the letter added.

Various countries have been urging all political parties to conduct the elections of the constituent assembly at the earliest to resolve all the problems dogging the country. They have been appealing all agitating political parties to take part in the elections to bring the derailed democracy on track.
