KATHMANDU: Authorities have rescued 19 children from a capital-based hostel where they have been living in a worrisome condition.
A team of the Central Child Welfare Board (CCWB), Maharajgunj based Police Circle, Budanikantha Municipality Ward-8 committee and the Balbaika Khojtalaash Kendra raided Golfutar-based New Karnali Hostel on Monday and rescued five boys and 14 girls.
Officials said the children had been living in squalid condition with poor hygiene standard.
Ram Bahadur Chand, focal person of CCWB, said the hostel had complied to none of the standard that was expected of a proper hostel and neither was it registered as orphanage.
According to the CCWB, the hostel operator Jay Biswokarma had lured people from the far-flung districts like Kalikot, Humla, Dolpa and Banke to bring their children to the hostel with the promise of providing them with education scholarship, along with food and shelter.
The team raided the hostel, following the complaint received by the Maharajgunj Police.
One of the employees of the hostel had complained the police that Biswokarma was out of contact since 20 days and the hostel was running out of resources, said Chand.
Of the total children who were rescued from the hostel, 13 were from Kalikot, four from Humla, and one-one each from Dolpa and Banke.
The rescued children were kept in the emergency protection center, said Chand adding that assessment is being carried out to reintegrate the rescued children with their families.
