12,000 taxi drivers face charges for cheating passengers in Nepal


KATHMANDU: Traffic police have taken action against 12,749 taxi drivers in Kathmandu Valley for cheating passengers in various pretexts.

A team from Metropolitan Traffic Police Division slapped action against taxi drivers for arbitrarily charging non-metered fare and meter-tampering in the fiscal year 2075/76 BS.

The Traffic Division had taken action against 8,120 taxi drivers in the fiscal year 2074/75 BS.

Basanta Kumar Panta, chief of metropolitan traffic police and Senior Superintendant of Police (SSP), shared that action was taken against those who cheated passengers with high faire.

“Every day 40-50 taxi drivers defrauding passengers are facing music”, he added. Traffic police penalizes Rs 3,000 from defrauding taxi driver. According to the division, it recommends the Transport

Management Department to suspend license of the taxi driver who faced action for charging high fare to passengers over five times.

Traffic police penalizes taxi drivers with Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 for denying to follow meter, tempering meter and not repairing taxi meter.
